Record high frozen tuna prices fall as industry rebounds from early 2012 supply shock

01/07/2014
In 2012, US frozen tuna imports have recovered from a supply shock at the beginning of the year which has resulted in a decline in market prices from record highs.

According to the US Department of Commerce, the US imported about 4.1 million lbs of tuna fillets, which includes loins and steaks in September.  This figure is up 75% versus the same month a year ago, but is up significantly compared to January 2012 when the US imported 75,909 lbs of tuna.

Though industry sources have been mum on January 2012’s tuna import shortfall, crediting possible FDA rejections and poor landings, but the industry has rebounded. As US tuna imports have recovered, market prices have declined off of record highs.

According to Urner Barry, the monthly average price of CO Treated 6 oz. yellowfin tuna steaks is $7.55 per lb in December, down 10% from September 2012’s record high price of US$8.42 per pound.
